How to Request Schaumburg Death Records

Three methods are available for requesting a Schaumburg death certificate. Each produces a certified copy with the same legal standing.

In Person

Visit the Chicago main office or the Skokie branch. Bring a government-issued photo ID and the $15 fee for the first copy. Additional copies cost $4 each when ordered at the same time. In-person requests are processed the same day when records are on file. Cash, check, and money order are accepted in person.

By Mail

Who Can Access Schaumburg Death Records

Illinois restricts access to certified death certificates. Under 410 ILCS 535/24, eligible requesters include the deceased's spouse, parent, child, grandparent, or sibling. Others with a direct and tangible interest, such as attorneys handling the estate or people with a legitimate financial claim, may also qualify.

You must show proof of identity and your relationship to the deceased when you apply. The Cook County Clerk's office reviews each request. If you do not qualify for a certified copy, you may still be able to request an informational or genealogical copy for records that are more than 20 years old.

Death Certificate Fees

Cook County charges $15 for the first certified copy of a death certificate. Each additional copy in the same order costs $4. If you order through VitalChek, an additional service fee applies on top of the county rate. The county's fee schedule is set by state statute under 410 ILCS 535/25.

Make checks and money orders payable to the Cook County Clerk. For in-person visits, cash is also accepted. Plan to pay by check or money order if you are mailing your request.
